What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. At BUCCA Santé Dentaire, our dentists perform extractions most often as a curative or preventative procedure or to remove problematic wisdom teeth.
Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth, usually between 17 and 25 years of age.
This third set of teeth is not always functional and can crowd out other teeth as they develop. They may also create problems with your oral hygiene. In these cases, your dentist may recommend removing them.
Repairing Excessive Damage
If a tooth is severely broken or damaged, it may need to be extracted. Injuries, gum disease or deep cavities may sometimes require extraction.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, your dentist will discuss tooth replacement options with you, which may include dental bridges, dental crowns, and dentures.
